5 Ways to Stay Fit and Have Fun This Summer
It’s officially SUMMERTIME!
This might be tied to some kind of childhood nostalgia from having summers off, but it’s easily my favorite time of year. I love being outside as much as possible and between the warm weather and the long sunny days, summertime makes that very easy to do.
It’s also when I tend to travel more which can throw a wrench into my normal routine. So I have a few tips for ways I like to help myself maintain a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing fun and I thought they might be helpful to some of you too!
1. Combine Fun with Fitness. Planning things to do that are both fun and active is a great way to get a workout without having to go to the gym. Some of these might include hiking, swimming, bicycling, or just walking around and exploring a new city. One of my personal favorites is paddle boarding. It’s an awesome workout for your core and you have the freedom to jump in the water to cool off whenever you want!
While I think it’s important to allow yourself a treat here and there, it’s also good to keep in mind that you don’t need dessert or alcohol or whatever else tempts you at every single meal. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all about balance!
3. Drink Low Calorie Cocktails. I’ve never been one to drink my calories but when it comes to hanging out and having fun, it’s very easy for me to lose track and throw back a 1,000 without even thinking twice. Having a cocktail that’s all-natural and low calorie makes it much easier to relax and enjoy myself without worrying about whether or not I’m over doing it.
One option that I personally love is the organic acai spirit from VEEV® which some of you might remember from my Superfruit Refresher Cocktails. Well the company recently came out with a new VitaFrute® cocktail flavor called Coconut Colada that’s made with the same organic VEEV® spirit, coconut water and organic pineapple juice.
In addition to the Coconut Colada, they also offer a Cosmopolitan, Margarita, and Lemonade, all of which are only 125 calories per serving and ready-to-drink!
Another thing I like to do is take the stairs whenever possible. It’s a great way to get a little burst of activity without having to break a sweat!

Ah yes, the ol’ all-things-in-moderation totally goes to the wayside when I’m travelling! I love this post – it’s making me want to eat lunch on a paddle board while drinking a fruity cocktail. Could be a challenge, but worth the try, right? :D Hope you had a fun weekend, dear!
Totally worth the try! ;)
Awesome tips! I feel like I always forget about drink calories, because you don’t chew them. But nope, a milkshake or smoothie can still be high calorie! And now I’ve gotta try paddleboarding :)
Yes, you should definitely try SUP! It’s so much fun! :)
Ohhh I’ll definitely be checking out those cocktails!! I don’t like wasting my calories on sugary drink mixes so those sound perfect!
I agree! I hate margaritas with processed syrup. They’re gross! These taste so much better and you can’t beat how easy they are too!
Hi Sarah! I did stand-up paddle-surfing only once before and LOVED the burn it gave my core to stabilize — a great activity for vacation. I’d love to do it again. I’ve also tried this Veev drink — the margarita one — and I like that it was pre-made, so all you had to do was drink it. Great tips on staying healthy here. Yay for summer!
I hope you get to do SUP again soon! And yes, I love that all you have to do with the VEEV cocktails is pour and drink. Doesn’t get easier than that!
Definitely love the getting fit while having fun tip. Sometimes going on a run around a new city is the best way to get to know it, and you get a workout in!
That’s a great idea, Dani! It doesn’t even feel like a workout when you’re taking in new scenery. :)
Did you SUP in Tahoe? I’m going this summer — let me know if you have great spots/places to rent boards :) Thanks!
We did! We rented boards from Kings Beach (Tahoe Paddle & Oar) and went up to Crystal Bay and back. It was about 4 hours altogether. I loved every second! :)
Great tips! I always like to continue with my morning runs/walks if I’m on vacation, because it’s a great way to exercise, see a new place by foot, and get the lay of the land before daily exploring commences.
That’s a great idea, Alyssa! :)
Yes to making fitness fun! Moving more and especially moving outside (!) is such a lot more fun in summer.
I’m not a cocktail drinker though their fancy look at times makes me consider them ;).
I don’t usually drink cocktails either but these are much less sugary than the kind that are typically served at bars. They’re just sweet enough! :)
Those cocktails look delicious! I love something cold and refreshing in the summer. I almost always stick with wine, usually cause I feel sick after drinking sugary cocktails with mixers.
I naturally crave more salads and smoothies in the summer, so it’s not tooooo hard to stay on track!
I agree!
Moderation is key, but I always allow myself to just enjoy my vacation and continue to eat intuitively, with some worthwhile splurges here and there. I can always find balance by exercising and eating healthfully the majority of the time.
my favorite tip is combining fun and exercise! I love to paddle board and take long walks on the beach, it never feels like i am doing exercise when i enjoy it :)
Yes yes! Balance, moderation and squeezing in activity when I can are definitely some of my favorites! Those cocktails look so refreshing! I’ll have to keep an eye out for them.
Awesome tips Sarah! I try to do all of these as well… moderation is something I always strive for, but as we all know, it’s easier said than done sometimes! ;-) I’ll have to look out for VEEV’s cocktails. I’ve never tried them but they sound delish!

these are awesome tips! i find it so much easier to not eat out whenever i pack something for the day that is healthy but i still love – cherries is a perfect example :)
Great post Sarah! I always like going on runs out in the sunshine during the summer months, and they tend to help keep me feeling healthy! I definitely feel the moderation struggle though – I’m the same on holiday, I always want to try all of the food!! I try to be good, but then the Oscar Wilde quote “Everything in moderation, including moderation.” always tempts me into eating more hahaha!
