Chocolate Chip Yogurt Donuts
Now that we’ve enjoyed a delicious and healthy summer salad, let’s make room for some chocolate! Mwuahahahahaha!
Mmmhmmm, you didn’t think I would skip dessert with all of this creamy Chobani in my fridge, did you?
No way…but I did do my best to make them healthy…scouts honor.
They may taste sinfully delicious but they’re made with heart-healthy whole grain and gluten-free flours, non-fat Greek yogurt (obviously), as little sugar as possible (two tablespoons-just enough to help the medicine go down) and semisweet chocolate chips for a little antioxidant boost. Can I get a woot woot for cacao?
Seriously though, stuff your face with one of these then go put on your bathing suit, you’ll be just fine.
Chocolate Chip Yogurt Donuts (Gluten-free)
- 1/2 cup oat flour*
- 1/2 cup quinoa flour
- 1/4 cup coconut flour
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 whole eggs
- 2 tablespoons cane sugar
- 1/2 cup non-fat vanilla Chobani
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons Earth Balance, melted (or melted coconut oil or butter)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Chocolate Icing
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons sunflower butter (or peanut butter/coconut oil/Earth Balance)
Makes 6 donuts
*Oats are naturally gluten-free but due to processing contamination, make sure you are buying gluten-free oats if you are allergic to gluten.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and then grease the donut pan and set aside.
Next, combine the flours, salt and baking powder in a medium size bowl and sift together. In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, sugar, Chobani yogurt, melted Earth Balance, vanilla extract and almond milk then stir well to combine.
Gradually add in the dry ingredients to the wet while continuing to stir, just until a smooth batter has formed.
Stir in the chocolate chips and then spoon the batter into the donut pan.
Cook in preheated oven for approximately 22 minutes. (Time may vary, keep and eye to see when they are puffy and light golden brown on the edges) Remove donuts from oven and cool for several minutes.
While donuts are cooling, melt 1 cup chocolate chips with two tablespoons sunflower butter in the microwave for 30 second increments so that is doesn’t burn.
Coat one side of each donut in chocolate…
Or drizzle (if you plizzle)…
And then devour politely consume like a starved beast lady.
By the way, if you prefer the chocolate coating to be hard (a.k.a. you don’t want to look like a 3 year-old running around in the candy store), simply refrigerate for 30 minutes before eating.
Also, this chocolate icing is pretty thick so if you prefer something thinner (more like a glaze) then you may want to add a little milk to the chocolate to help lighten it a bit.
Please, I beg you, do not be fooled by the healthy ingredients in these donuts. They are incredibly satisfying and have a creamy texture that is loaded with salty, sweet and chocolatey flavor. {just a few of the best things in life}
What’s your favorite kind of donut?
These are so perfect looking……..especially with that chocolate icing on top! Can’t even believe these are healthy :)
Well, they are healthier, I don’t know if they could be classified as completely healthy but it’s nice to feel a little less guilt while having dessert. ;)
I’m not usually the biggest donut fan but these sound amazing! I thinkI would like them more than typical donuts, they probably wouldnt make my stomach hurt. I don’t have a donut pan so I wonder if this would work in muffin cups.
I think they would work well as muffins too. They are very dense though because of the oat flour so they won’t be light muffins but they didn’t hurt my stomach one bit. You can also sub coconut oil or canola oil for the Earth Balance, or real butter- if you must. ;)
I adore donuts(as do my kids!!) and to find a healthy one makes me so happy!!! I just need to figure out where to buy the alternative type flours, like quinoa and coconut. Do you order them online or buy at a local grocery store?
I usually buy them at Whole Foods but I have found them before at HEB when I lived in Texas. Quinoa flour is pretty expensive (high in nutrition though- you get what you pay for!) so rice flour is another option that would work well. But quinoa flour makes really good cookies. :)
Can I come over?! I literally gasped when I read through this post! Holy cow these look incredibly delicious. Wowza!
Thanks Melanie! I would totally give you one but I ate the last one for dessert last night! I’m kind of bummed. ;)
Oh my goodness girl…these look amazing! Now I just need a donut pan! ;)
I pinned these for a future breakfast!
Oh now these just look amazing! You can definitely never go wrong with chocolate :D Pinning these for when I finally get a donut pan.
These look AMAZING- and the line about consuming like a starved beast (lady) made me crack up! This recipe might just be the kick in the behind i needed to get a donut pan. i realllly want to make these!
Oh my…these look amazing! I want one now! :-)
can you please overnight me one of these lady? yum!
Ok woman – you’ve got some serious kitchen skills. These donuts look amazing!
I think I lucked out that these turned out as good as they did because most of the time, gluten-free baking is a total failure for me.
Mmm! These donuts look incredible. Do you usually bake GF? The trio of flours you used is this recipe is quite similar to the blend I use. Coconut flour is by far my favourite.
Thanks Christine! No, I don’t usually bake gluten-free but I based this recipe on the Blueberry Lemon Yogurt Donuts I made and subbed out the all-purpose flour for the oat flour. I took a risk but it worked out well! I’ll be sure to check out some of your recipes for inspiration because I usually fail horribly at gluten-free baking. Yes, I too love coconut flour and enjoy putting my face in the bag and smelling it before I use it in a recipe! :)
These looks adorable and SO tasty! I love your photos!
Somebody please buy me a donut pan ASAP! ;)
O. M. G. These look amazing! I’m all about healthy donuts and these look like they’d be perfect. Plus, I’m never going to turn away chocolate for breakfast ;)
Oh my gosh! They look great! I love donuts and chocolate, and they are gluten free too, it´s like the perfect recipe!
Thanks Ana! I can tell by your donut holes (they look incredible!) that you love both! :)
sounds like a delish doughnut!
Looks amazing! Your photography is so good I wanted to take a bite out of my screen:) These will be on my to-do list for this week…
Thanks Sharon! Let me know how they turn out if you end up making them! :)
OM NOM NOM NOM NOM. Ah, these look wonderful, Sarah! My sweet tooth was just doing backflips and somersaults just thinking about these donuts.

looks great but…….i have a problem!!in italy there aren’t all the ingredients :(
Oh, sorry Rebecca! What are you unable to find? Maybe there is something you can use as a substitution?
ok…let’s see….the ingredients are: quinoa flour and Earth Balance (what is??)……for the non-fat vanilla Chobani i can use a normal greek yogurt!?!thanks!
Earth Balance is a natural vegan margarine but you could use regular butter or your favorite butter substitute. If you want to keep them gluten-free, you could use rice flour in place of the quinoa flour or regular white flour if you don’t need them to be gluten-free.
Yes, you can use regular Greek yogurt in place of the Chobani. Full fat Greek yogurt may change the texture but I wouldn’t think in a bad way.
I hope that helps! Let me know how they turn out if you decide to make them. :)

Could I use regular flour in place of the others? Also, can I sub regular yogurt for greek yogurt? Obviously, they wouldn’t be as healthy…it’ll really be more like dessert, but oh well haha
Absolutely! I’m not sure how subbing regular yogurt would work but using AP flour would definitely work out fine. I was just trying to make them gluten-free. I ate them for dessert anyways so it doesn’t matter! ;)

My whole family loves these and I feel good about a sneaky healthyier option. Do you happen to know what the calorie or fat content would be?
I calculated them to be about 500 calories per donut. But for me they are really dense and filling so I only ate half at a time. I’m glad you like them!
Very good recipe. Made a little different. Baked like a cake and swirled peanut butter and sugar free jelly on top yummy! Thanks
That sounds delicious Brenda! :)
These look great.. always looking for gf options… but I am also allergic to oatmeal. Would have to figure out a different option.
GF all purpose flour or brown rice flour might work.
These are AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS!!!!!!!! When i first saw the pictures, i just had to go out and buy a donut muffin pan! My husband who is usually skeptical about anything healthy/gluten free LOVED these! I made some with glaze and left a few without and honestly, they are just as yummy without. Thank you SO much for this recipe. :) I have also tried your energy balls recipe and your veggie fritatta (both are amazing!). I have always eaten fairly healthy but since my husband now has high cholesterol we have to be even more careful. I am so happy that i found your site, and have access to yummy meals that are healthy but that actually taste good too!
Your comment made my day, Amanda! Thank you!! :)
Do you think I swap out the yogurt for egg whites?
I’m afraid not. The yogurt supplies a good deal of moisture which egg whites do not. Sorry!

Could you make these into muffins if you do not have a doughnut pan?
Hi Jennifer! Yes, you can make them into muffins. I hope you love them!
Hi! It looks amazing! But can we put flax eggs instead of the 2 whole eggs? Will it work the same? Or do you have other vegan alternatives? Thanks !! :)
I wouldn’t recommend using flax eggs for this recipe because it calls for coconut flour which is extremely reliant on the egg. Because of that I’m not sure how I would make these vegan. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help!
I can’t find the brand of yougurt you used in the recipe so is it okay to use any brand of vanilla non fat yougurt?
Yes! Any brand should work. :)
Also I only have all purpose flour and coconut flour at my supermarket. Can I use just those two flours for the recipe and if so how much do I use of each?
